the ship and mitre dale street liverpool' finest real ale pub with an art deco style

The Ship & Mitre has a longstanding tradition for serving an excellent range of quality real ales and imported beers. The pub is famous amongst beer connoisseurs and ale lovers throughout the U.K. and enjoys visitors from across the country and beyond.

The Ship specialises in excellent beer offering twelve real ales purchased predominantly through the many nation wide micro-breweries, along with over one hundred imported beers from Belgium, Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia.

Voted "Pub of the Year" by the Liverpool and District CAMRA branch for the previous eight out of ten years, quality is top of the list. All of our beers are served in oversized lined glasses, thus ensuring a full pint, or where possible for our international beers, the correct glass as supplied by the brewery.

A BRIEF HISTORY

This has proved quite difficult to do so far due to the lack of primary source evidence available. It is, however, clear that there has been a pub and/or hotel on the current site for at least one hundred and twenty years if not longer.

The current building was built c. 1935 and is one of the few remaining Art Deco buildings within the city of Liverpool. It was owned by Bents brewery of Liverpool for a substantial period of time, and was their flagship pub. It then became a free trade pub in c. 1970's with substantial redevelopment back in the late seventies/early eighties coinciding with the name change from "The Mitre" to the "The Ship & Mitre" as the front bar interior explains.

"The Mitre" as it is still know with a lot of taxi drivers has been a sea mans pub which was not adverse to the occasional "straightener" or two along with the odd "girlfriend for a tanner".

The pub has played host to a number of musicians over the years many being Jazz orientated as well as the possibility of Paul Simon back in the mid sixties (this is unconfirmed although he did play a number of small venues and pubs in Liverpool during that time).

In its more recent history the pub took on the responsibility of looking after and promotion of the real ale scene especially in Liverpool. And it is this more recent history for which we intend to keep on maintaining and improving.

Although the main pub area has lost some of its Art Deco feel, subtle elements remain.

That said, the pub retains an excellent example of art deco styling on the stairwell to the upper levels and into an amazing wood panelled room on the first floor. Despite this not being a part of the pub as a whole it is available for functions and is used as a meeting place by several clubs and societies that frequent this public house. My longer term ambition is to incorporate this beautiful space into the main "pub" area. Please view the News and events page for up to date info on what is happening.

Do you know of any history surrounding the pub? Do you have pictures or friends who are familiar with the premises? Please send in your information. It would be very much appreciated.

CAN YOU HELP US?

As stated on the home page our aim is to offer the consumer the best quality and selection of cask ales and imported beers in the land.

In order to achieve this goal it is important that we listen to our customers' views and opinions. If you know the pub, please take time to offer us your views and opinions through either this web site or the suggestion box situated in the pub. If you have yet to visit the pub please do so, but you can still help us! Do you know of any other pubs which offer the range of beers that we do? What do you enjoy in a pub? What are your expectations? Please help us be the best.
