Description

A lighthearted story with a subtle feminist undertone that celebrates the joy of pockets, and how they can unleash the inquisitive, adventurous spirit of all young children. Written in a gentle rhyme that reflects the slow pace of Mouse’s rambling journey, and illustrated in the inimitable style of Alice Melvin, Mouse’s Wood is a heart-warming celebration of slow living in nature. Mouse moves on to wake up Hedgehog for the arrival of spring and as he continues along the path in the wood, Mouse’s journey from friend to friend maps out the changes in seasons from January through to December, from picnicking among the bluebells with Mole in May and picking berries with Dormouse in June, to taking refuge in Fox’s cozy caravan as winter draws in. Her picture books for children, including Grandma's House, The High Street, Counting Birds, and An A-to-Z Treasure Hunt, have together sold over 150,000 copies worldwide.

This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally).Described as 'an utter gem' by the Telegraph, this exquisitely illustrated picture book with die-cut flaps follows the woodland ramblings of Mouse through the change in seasons. Alice has also worked with Tate on an extensive range of children’s merchandise including many interactive ‘cut-out-and-make’ kits and children’s clothing.

Eventually the healing process of drawing nature helped me rediscover my creativity, and create this book. In February, Mouse is wrapped ‘ up warm/ against the winter’s chill’ so that he might stroll in the ‘morning mist’. Then again, we’re seeing the changes to the forest, from the first buds on the trees, to the flight of goldfinch, the burst of April cherry blossom, or a huge ‘ stretched out – chequered sheet’ May picnic.

There are fancy dresses, frilly dresses, stripy dresses, silly dresses, sun dresses, fun dresses, blue dresses, green. It seems every care has been taken, from the flora and fauna that might be discovered through the seasons, to the attire and the feelings too. Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example. Written with a gentle rhyme that reflects the slow pace of Mouse’s rambling journey, and illustrated in Alice Melvin’s inimitable style, Mouse’s Wood is a heartwarming celebration of slow living in nature.

Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do. You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods. A LITTLE BIT BRAVE is a funny, reassuring picture book which shows that we're all a lot braver than we think.

An exquisitely illustrated novelty picture book with die-cut flaps that follows the woodland ramblings of Mouse through the change in seasons. Alice went on to publish a further eight titles with Tate including Counting Birds, The High Street and Grandma’s House, winning a Book Trust Best New Illustrator Award in 2011.

It’s a fantastic independent book seller that will actually be responsive and select appropriate books for you. However, we can peek through the cut out window, and thereafter lift the flap to discover Mouse reading in bed. At the end of the book a double page spread provides a guide of what to spot when you are out and about in the woodland.
